If your attraction is a VISIT FLORIDA Partner, ensure your attraction’s information, imagery, and experiences are current in the Partner Portal.
Respond promptly when VISIT FLORIDA or its Partners request content, story ideas, or participation.
To help VISIT FLORIDA attractions Partners get even more visibility, VISIT FLORIDA has created a new attractions section on the Deals Page of VISITFLORIDA.com. Your business will receive extra exposure just by submitting your current deals! To share a featured deal with us, please submit it through the Partner Portal. Professional Development and Employee Advancement Grant Program

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation Professional Development and Employee Advancement Grant Program has been developed to provide FAA member businesses (Attractions & Associate Members) financial support to develop new and build capacity for existing professional development and leadership programs. Along with the FASF scholarship program, this grant program promotes the Foundation’s mission to develop the Florida attraction industry’s workforce and prepare for future challenges.

This year, Grants are limited to $2500 maximum. Grant awards will be announced at the 2026 FAA Annual Conference.

Qualifying programs can include – individual or group programs for professional development, specific skills training, job-specific certifications, leadership development, and industry conferences. Qualifying Programs MUST provide an educational component that is relevant to the attractions industry and improve employee proficiencies and, ultimately, the guest experience. Grant funds may not be used toward registration for the FAA’s Annual Conference.

FAA Launches Leadership Academy to Develop the Next Generation of Industry Leaders

This month marks the official launch of the Florida Attractions Association Leadership Academy, an exciting new professional development initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders within Florida’s attractions industry.

Following a competitive application process, 35 rising leaders from FAA member attractions were selected to participate as inaugural cohort members. These individuals represent a diverse cross-section of disciplines and attraction types, united by a shared commitment to leadership growth, collaboration, and industry advancement.

The Academy is led by Dan Donovan (Universal Destinations & Experiences), Past Chairman of the FAA, who will serve as Dean of the program. Dan brings decades of industry experience and a passion for mentoring emerging leaders.

Participants will engage in a robust curriculum taught by an accomplished faculty of FAA past chairmen and industry leaders, including:

The FAA Leadership Academy is a six-month, cohort-based professional development experience that brings together emerging leaders (manager level and above) for an engaging journey of learning and collaboration. Participants will explore key facets of leadership, operations, strategy, and innovation through a virtual classroom facilitated by former FAA Chairs and respected industry experts who bring real-world insight to every session.

1. How long have you been in the attractions industry?

I have been in the tour & travel industry for over 30 years and have worked in various areas including theme parks, hotels, attractions and theater.

2. What is your favorite job you’ve had in the industry and why?

I am currently in my dream role as Director, Group Sales & Marketing, at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. I have a passion for the arts and spent many years as a performer at Walt Disney World.

3. What is the most rewarding aspect of working in/for the attraction industry?

My role is rewarding because I get to build relationships with both customers and industry colleagues. I love to welcome groups to the Dr. Phillips Center, many who are visiting for the very first time.

4. What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

No surprise, I love to travel. I love to experience new destinations and to explore nature. I love to go hiking and frequent the mountains of Colorado.

5. Aside from Florida, what is your dream vacation destination and why?

I am about to head out on my first European vacation. My wife and I will be visiting London and Edinburgh to enjoy some shows in the West End and to check out the sites where Harry Potter was created.

The Florida Attractions Association is proud to look back on another successful Florida Attractions District Days this September. During the month, attractions across the state opened their doors to legislative delegations to emphasize the critical role of our industry in local economies, job creation, and community life.

Florida Attractions District Days is an advocacy initiative created to build relationships between attractions and their county legislative delegations. By inviting legislators on educational tours, attractions make their voices heard—not as political actors, but as local economic and cultural stewards. Sharing tax impact, employment numbers, cultural contributions, and community engagement helps legislators better understand our industry’s value ahead of session.

This year’s kickoff message reminded members:

“Sooner or later, government will make decisions that impact your attraction. Having your county’s Legislative Delegation know your business gives FAA and its lobby team a better platform for advocacy.”

To support each site-hosted visit, FAA provided a toolkit: a legislative database, sample invitation and press release templates, talking-point guides, social media resources, and FAQs answered by our advocacy team.

Dozens of attractions around the state participated, inviting state representatives and senators to tour and engage.
A webinar held September 11 featured FAA Chair Samantha Palmer, lobby team Liberty Partners of Tallahassee, and Rep. Rachel Plakon, discussing strategies and best practices for hosting legislative visits.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many reported newfound or deeper relationships with local legislators, which will strengthen FAA’s advocacy capacity heading into the 2026 Legislative Session.

A heartfelt thanks to every participating attraction, every legislator who met with hosts, and FAA staff and lobby partners who made the month possible. Your efforts are shaping a stronger, more connected industry voice in Tallahassee.

It’s a Wrap! - Expedition FAA–Miami: Where Art Meets Attraction

On September 30, nearly 60 leaders from Florida’s attractions community gathered in Miami for Expedition FAA–Miami: Where Art Meets Attraction—a full day of discovery, idea-sharing, and inspiration at the intersection of culture and guest experience.

We convened in the Rubell Museum for a fast-paced program featuring case studies, peer exchanges, and our popular “Seven for Seven” session. Conversations centered on practical ways attractions can weave arts and culture into their operations—co-marketing with local partners, pop-up activations, immersive storytelling, and smart funding strategies.

As the sun set, we moved to Wynwood Walls for an evening surrounded by world-class street art. Jessica Goldman Srebnick shared the compelling story of the district’s renaissance and how intentional cultural investment can transform a neighborhood and elevate visitor appeal. The setting—and the conversation—captured the spirit of the day: creative, collaborative, and actionable.

VISIT FLORIDA has released its estimated quarterly visitation numbers, reporting Q2 year-over-year growth from 34.2 to 34.4 million visitors. As many of our members know, overall visitation to Florida does not always translate into increased attendance at attractions. We appreciate VISIT FLORIDA’s transparency in providing supplemental insights, noting that lower visitor spending and shorter lengths of stay continue to create challenging conditions. It is encouraging to see VISIT FLORIDA recognize these trends as they consider appropriate marketing responses.

What If Your County’s TDC Was Dissolved and Bed Tax Dollars Were Redirected?

That’s exactly what nearly happened during the 2025 Florida Legislative Session.

HB 1221, introduced by the Florida House of Representatives and passed by a 65–42 vote, proposed sweeping changes to the way Tourist Development Tax (TDT) funds are used. If enacted, the bill would have:

Redirected 75% of TDT revenue to offset property taxes—effectively eliminating funding for tourism promotion, marketing, and tourism-related facilities.
Dissolved every Tourist Development Council (TDC) in Florida by the end of 2025.
Required a public referendum every eight years to continue levying the TDT for the sole purpose of a property tax discount.

Fortunately, the Florida Senate rejected this damaging proposal and protected the integrity of Florida’s tourism economy.

Now, as we look ahead to the 2026 Legislative Session—with interim committee weeks beginning October 6, 2025—this is the perfect time to engage with your State Representative.

If your Representative voted NO on HB 1221, consider sending a note of thanks for supporting Florida’s tourism marketing efforts.
If your Representative voted YES on HB 1221, now is a critical time to respectfully express your concerns and help them understand the value of investing in tourism.

In 2026, Florida and the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. In December 2024, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Executive Order 24-267, which directed the Department of State to promote and encourage, among other things:

Civic, cultural, and historic education facilitating public understanding of the principles of the Declaration of Independence, the origin and meaning of inalienable rights, American’s triumph in the Revolutionary War, the meaning of “E Pluribus Unum,” and America’s “Charters of Freedom’”
Awareness of the necessity and virtue in preserving self-government; or
Honoring of veterans of all generations who have served and sacrificed to preserve freedom in America and around the world.

Coming up during the month of September, the Florida Attractions Association will sponsor Florida Attractions District Days, encouraging our members to invite members of their country’s Legislative Delegation and other public officials to visit their attraction for an educational tour.

But why?

For your attraction:

Sooner or later, government will make decisions that will impact your attraction. Knowing members of your county’s Legislative Delegation and also those elected in your local county (and city) government leadership will help you navigate through the process of local ordinances and regulations that could make or break your business. Hosting public officials will give you an edge when they know you, your business and how your attraction contributes to the economy and quality of life for your county’s citizens.

For our industry:

Your county’s Legislative delegation will convene with lawmakers from around the state for the 2026 Legislative Session in Tallahassee on Tuesday, January 13. During Session may be the worst time to make an initial contact with your Legislator. Your contact with your local Legislators now will create relationships that can yield precious dividends to your attraction AND our industry. Once the hectic days of Session begin, your elected official’s attention will be stretched in multiple directions – all at the same time!

Your participation sets the stage for your association to take action on your behalf when bills affecting our members are filed. Your Legislators already knowing your business and the positive impact you have on your community gives our FAA lobby team at Liberty Partners of Tallahassee and your FAA staff a significant advantage is working toward desirable outcomes.

Board Member Focus: 5 Questions - Christina Schwartzman, CEO, Sawgrass Recreation Park

1. How long have you been in the attractions industry?

I’ve been in the attractions industry for 18 years. While finishing my criminology degree at the University of Florida, I helped rebuild our family park after Hurricane Wilma. I planned to join the U.S. Marshal Academy, but while waiting, I fell in love with my dad’s vision. When the call came, I stayed. Best decision ever.

2. What is your favorite job you’ve had in the industry and why?

Over 18 years, I’ve worn many hats in our family business—sales, marketing, cleaning bathrooms, wrangling gators, and now CEO. My favorite roles are leading major capital projects and overseeing HR. Supporting our team and improving guest spaces is deeply rewarding. Sneaking away to witness a guest experiencing one of their bucket list moments? Priceless.

3. What is the most rewarding aspect of working in/for the attraction industry?

Attractions create pure magic. We’re not routine—we offer unforgettable moments. Whether it’s your toddler giggling at a splash pad, your child riding their first coaster, or holding your partner’s hand on a spring-fed float, time stands still. The memories we help create with loved ones are priceless—and truly worth more than gold.

4. What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

Like many families post-pandemic, we’ve made joy and adventure a priority! On school breaks or a long weekend, we explore Florida’s hidden gems—and occasionally escape to the quiet mountains. I’m a proud mom, Girl Scout leader, PTA member, and yearbook designer. I also lead three companies and serve on several boards, including FAA, VISIT FLORIDA, Greater Fort Lauderdale’s Marketing Committee, and the Jack and Jill Foundation. Life is full—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

5. Aside from Florida, what is your dream vacation destination and why?

We’re excited to one day explore Ireland and Scotland as a family. We love hiking, nature, and places rich in history—so these destinations are a perfect fit. With family roots in both countries, the trip will be especially meaningful. My husband and I even dream of retiring there after our time at Sawgrass Recreation Park.

Attraction Member Spotlight | Dinosaur World

Dinosaur World, located in Plant City, Florida (between Tampa and Orlando) is certainly one of the FAA’s most unique attraction members. The outdoor park blends history with adventure in a one-of-a-kind dinosaur experience that features well over 200 life-sized dinosaur sculptures that are located throughout the 22-acre park.

There is so much to see and experience at Dinosaur World Florida from immersive activities such as Aunt Cera’s Fossil Dig where guests can sift through the soil to uncover ancient marine life fossils such as shark teeth, Mosasaurus teeth, ammonites, and crinoids to uncovering hidden treasures in Uncle Rex’s Gem Mine. Their most recent exhibit is: Doom of the Dinosaurs, featuring 16 authentic life-sized casts of discovered dinosaur skeletons, authentic fossils, cast traces and including the full sized cast of T-Rex “Stan.” There are so many interactive exhibits to delight and amaze children and the entire family, and one of the most popular spots is the Dino-themed playground that features slides and swings.

Major holidays are always a very special time at Dinosaur World and the park is one of the more popular destinations in Central Florida for school field trips and birthday parties. Dinosaur World can also boast of its unique 5,000 square foot gift shop that offers so many prehistoric artifacts and toys and games.

While this great family friendly attraction is unique for Florida, and there are actually two additional Dinosaur World attraction locations in Cave City, Kentucky and Glen Rose, Texas. 2025 FAA Legislative Session Summary from Liberty Partners of Tallahassee

The Florida Legislature adjourned Sine Die on June 16, 2025, after a contentious and extended session lasting 105 days. Tensions between House Speaker Danny Perez and Governor Ron DeSantis led to disputes over illegal immigration enforcement, tax cuts, and spending, delaying legislative progress. The Legislature failed to complete its only constitutional obligation—passing the state budget—within the regular 60-day session, prompting an extension through June 6 via House Concurrent Resolution 1631, limiting consideration to 16 key bills including the budget and tax package.

Although an initial budget agreement was reached on May 2, disagreements resurfaced after Governor DeSantis rejected the House’s proposed sales tax cuts, causing the plan to unravel. A second extension, House Concurrent Resolution 1635, prolonged the session to June 18 to avoid a government shutdown.

Contentious bills such as SB 110 (Rural Renaissance) and HB 7033 (which proposed eliminating Tourist Development Councils and overhauling local bed tax use) were excluded. However, the final tax package (HB 7031) allowed for expanded uses of Tourist Development Taxes in fiscally constrained coastal counties and lifeguard training.

Significant progress was made the week of June 9, culminating in the release of the budget conference report on June 13. The Legislature approved a $115.1 billion budget—$500 million less than the Governor’s proposal—on June 16, following the required 72-hour review period. The budget now awaits Governor DeSantis’ review and possible line-item vetoes. It includes $80 million for VISIT FLORIDA and $20.8 million for cultural and museum grants.

FASF Awards Professional Development Grants to FAA Member Businesses

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation (FASF) has awarded grants to four Florida Attractions Association (FAA) member businesses to support their internal professional development programs. These grants are part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to cultivating the next generation of leaders within Florida’s attractions industry.

Each year, FASF—an FAA-established 501(c)(3) nonprofit—reviews grant applications from member businesses seeking to enhance their internal training and leadership development initiatives. In addition to these grants, FASF provides scholarships to post-secondary students pursuing careers in hospitality and tourism-related fields.

Thanks to the continued generosity of FAA members, the Foundation has awarded more than $121,000 since its founding in 2014. This includes support for 84 student scholarship recipients and 8 FAA member businesses through professional development grants.

Grants are awarded exclusively to FAA member businesses, reinforcing the industry's investment in its people and future.

IMAG History & Science Center

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation has awarded a $2,500 grant to the IMAG History & Science Center in support of staff participation in the 2026 Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) Symposium and Workshop. This vital training initiative aims to enhance workforce capacity through professional development, equipping IMAG’s aquatic operations team with advanced knowledge in life support system (LSS) technologies. The symposium offers hands-on workshops, certification opportunities, and technical presentations on cutting-edge filtration, sterilization, and water quality management techniques.

Through this experience, IMAG staff will earn AALSO Level II certifications, expand their technical expertise, and strengthen operational efficiency. The grant will help cover registration, travel, lodging, and training materials for one of three participating aquatics team members. By investing in staff education, IMAG is not only improving animal care and exhibit quality but also enriching the overall guest experience—advancing its mission and contributing to excellence within Florida’s attractions industry.

ZooTampa at Lowry Park

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation has awarded a $2,500 grant to ZooTampa at Lowry Park to support professional development for its private events team. The funding will enable three team members to attend the 2025 Florida Festivals & Events Association (FFEA) Annual Convention & Expo, a three-day event focused on festival production, marketing, and event logistics. As a newly formed group with less than two years of experience in event management, this opportunity will allow the team to gain vital insights, learn best practices, and refine their skills.

Attendees will explore topics such as social media marketing, event logistics, and emerging technologies—all aimed at enhancing ZooTampa’s private events. The grant will cover registration, travel, and lodging costs. By bringing back knowledge to share with the full 15-member department, the team will elevate the zoo’s event offerings, boost guest satisfaction, and support ZooTampa’s mission to deliver exceptional experiences to its visitors.

Sawgrass Recreation Park

Sawgrass Recreation Park has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation to support the professional development of its head animal curator. The funding will enable participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) “Creating Successful Exhibits” course in 2026. This intensive program focuses on planning, designing, and fabricating impactful and sustainable animal habitats. It includes hands-on training in exhibit development, budgeting, timeline construction, and the integration of external consultants.

While the course does not provide formal certification, it will equip Sawgrass Recreation Park with critical skills for the complete redesign of its animal exhibit area. The new exhibits will emphasize hands-on learning and inclusivity for visitors with special needs or sensory challenges. Knowledge gained will be shared with the entire animal care and engineering teams, ensuring long-term benefits. This grant helps further the park’s mission of education, conservation, and accessible, engaging experiences for all guests.

Florida Air Museum

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation has awarded a $1,760 grant to the Florida Air Museum to support participation in the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Educational Program. This comprehensive training initiative will empower museum staff with cutting-edge knowledge and professional development opportunities tailored to the attractions industry. Covering key topics such as cybersecurity awareness, immersive experience design, and instructional training development, the program combines online learning, on-the-job training, and in-person experiences at IAAPA expos and EDUTours.

Participants also gain access to mentorship programs and the IAAPA Common Body of Knowledge framework, ensuring alignment with industry standards. The grant fully covers program costs and will lead to IAAPA certification—a credential validating professional expertise in areas like operations, safety, marketing, and HR. This investment supports the Florida Air Museum’s mission to deliver top-tier visitor experiences and ensures continued innovation and excellence in the state's dynamic attractions industry.

Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation Announces 2025 Scholarship Recipients

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation (FASF) proudly announced the recipients of its 2025 Scholarship Program during the Florida Attractions Annual Conference in Ponte Vedra Beach on June 9.

Established in 2014 by the Florida Attractions Association (FAA) and its Board of Directors, the Foundation was created to support the future of Florida’s tourism workforce by providing financial assistance to post-secondary students pursuing careers in hospitality-related fields.

FASF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, also funds professional development opportunities for industry leaders and awards grants to FAA member businesses to support internal training initiatives.

Thanks to the generous support of FAA members, the Foundation has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships and grants since its inception. Scholarships are available exclusively to employees of FAA member businesses and their dependents; grants are awarded to FAA member businesses.

William (Quin) Anderson

William "Quin" Anderson has received a scholarship from the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation in recognition of his dedication to the attractions industry and academic excellence. A Business Management major with a 3.56 GPA, Quin currently works at ZooTampa and has completed over 200 credit hours in hospitality-related coursework.

His passion for guest experience and leadership is evident in his active involvement with organizations like the President’s Leadership Fellows and Collegiate Leadership Tampa Bay. Quin also serves as an IAAPA Show Ambassador, where he was honored as Ambassador of the Year.

Quin’s short-term goal is to continue building his expertise in the attractions industry and secure a full-time role upon graduation in 2025. Long-term, he aspires to launch his own attraction business and mentor future professionals. With his strong foundation and vision, Quin is poised to make a lasting impact in Florida’s tourism landscape.

Maria Dezubiria

Chad Middleton Memorial Scholarship

Maria Dezubiria has been awarded a scholarship from the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation in recognition of her outstanding academic and professional accomplishments. A graduate of Hospitality Management with Cum Laude honors, Maria is currently pursuing a Master’s in Event Leadership while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. She brings hands-on experience from two of the world’s top entertainment companies—Universal Orlando, where she works in Human Resources Operations, and The Walt Disney Company, where she serves as a professional intern and member of a Local Diversity Action Team.

Maria’s short-term goal is to step into a leadership role in event operations, where she can apply her passion for immersive storytelling and guest experience. Long-term, she aspires to become a senior leader in event strategy at Disney or Universal, crafting innovative, inclusive events that inspire and delight. Maria’s drive and dedication mark her as a rising star in Florida’s attractions and events industry.

Greer Gaspard

Greer Gaspard, an ambitious and high-achieving student, has received a Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation award. Pursuing a double major in Accounting and Biology, Greer maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA and brings a unique blend of business and science to the future of zoological management. As a dependent of a SeaWorld Orlando employee, Greer exemplifies a strong connection to Florida’s attractions industry.

Greer is a published author and active community member, serving as a figure skating coach, tutor, and student member of the International Marine Animal Trainers’ Association. Her long-term vision is to become CFO and eventually CEO of a zoo, aquarium, or wildlife sanctuary, where she can combine financial leadership with a passion for conservation.

This scholarship recognizes Greer’s dedication to academic excellence and her commitment to advancing wildlife care and education. Her future promises to make a lasting impact in Florida’s zoological community.

Ashley Smith

Barbara Kenney Honorary Scholarship

Ashley Smith, a standout student at the University of Central Florida, has received a prestigious scholarship from the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation. A first-generation college student majoring in Marketing and Finance, Ashley has demonstrated exceptional dedication through her 550 internship hours at Universal Orlando Resort. Her work with the Digital & Technology team has fueled her passion for the hospitality and travel industry.

In addition to her academic achievements and 3.41 GPA, Ashley’s leadership shines through her involvement in organizations like Collegiate DECA and College of Business Ambassadors. She’s also earned accolades from Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and DECA. This summer, she will continue her growth as a Nestlé sales intern and Coca-Cola campus ambassador.

Ashley plans to pursue a full-time marketing or sales role at Universal Destinations and Experiences after graduation, with long-term goals of leadership in the attractions industry. Her story embodies the future of Florida tourism and hospitality.

Jaedyn Sobota

Arthur Hertz Memorial Scholarship

Jaedyn Sobota, a dedicated Hospitality Management student at the University of Central Florida, has received a prestigious scholarship from the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation. A valued team member at Universal Orlando Resort, Jaedyn has already made a strong impression, earning the "Rookie Caretaker of the Year" award within just five months of joining the Attractions team.

With a 3.6 GPA and consistent recognition on the Dean’s List, she exemplifies both academic and professional excellence. Jaedyn is actively involved on campus as Vice President of UCF’s Improv Academy and a member of its audition-only House and Musical Improv teams. About the Three Named Scholarships

Chad Middleton Memorial Scholarship

We lost our friend Chad Michael Middleton in a tragic accident in 2018. A third-generation leader at FPIS Brochure Distribution, founded by his grandmother and one of FAA’s first associate members, Chad was known for his Christian values, love for his wife and four sons, and commitment to excellence.

Respected for his professionalism and kindness, Chad was a unifying presence and a gentle peacemaker. His legacy continues through the lasting impact he made at FPIS and the many lives he touched.

The Chad Middleton Memorial Scholarship, funded by the Rick Soverns family of Sawgrass Recreation Park, honors a cherished friend and a life lived with purpose.

Barbara Kenney Honorary Scholarship

Ten years ago, Barbara Kenney of Kenney Communications provided the seed funding that launched the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation. Her generous gift enabled the Foundation to begin awarding scholarships to students pursuing careers in attractions and tourism.

Barbara, founder and CEO of Kenney Communications based in Orlando, has over 40 years of experience in strategic communications. Her company was among the FAA’s first associate members, and she was named FAA Associate Member of the Year in 1997.

Arthur Hertz Memorial Scholarship

Arthur Hertz, born in Brooklyn, New York, became a true Miamian after moving there at age 13. He joined Wometco Enterprises in 1955, learning the tourism industry from the ground up. He played a key role in Wometco’s acquisition of the Miami Seaquarium and helped manage other Florida attractions like the Citrus Tower and Conch Tour Train.

A champion for tourism, Arthur served on the board of the Greater Miami CVB, helped create VISIT FLORIDA, and later chaired its board. Inducted into the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame in 2004, Arthur was also a generous philanthropist. In his memory, his family proudly funds the Arthur Hertz Memorial Scholarship.

FAA Legislative Alert – Call to Action – Proposal to Eliminate County Tourism Promotion Heard in Two House Committees Today

In an unexpected move late yesterday, the Florida House released a radical Proposed Committee Substitute (PCS) of HB 1221. Until yesterday afternoon, the FAA’s objection to the House Bill was the requirement for a county’s Tourism Development Tax (TDT / Bed Tax) to be reauthorized by public referendum every 8 years.

Yesterday’s PCS would eliminate your county’s Tourist Development Council AND allow counties to use Bed Tax FOR ANY PURPOSE.

Below, (in the interest of time) I’m sharing a message from Robert Skrob (Executive Director, Destinations Florida) to describe this unfortunate circumstance.

Our ask – to contact your State Representative NOW and oppose PCS for CS/HB 1221.

Proposal to Eliminate County Tourism Promotion Heard in Two House Committees Today

Yes, you read that correctly.

For weeks, we’ve been sounding the alarm about House Bill 1221 by Representative Monique Miller (R)—a proposal that would force all Tourist Development Taxes (TDTs) to expire every eight years, placing Florida’s tourism economy on a never-ending treadmill of uncertainty.

Now, with less than 24 hours’ notice, an amendment has been filed that takes the threat to a whole new level.

This amendment not only maintains the damaging 8-year sunset provision—it completely eliminates the ability of counties to use TDTs for their intended purpose: promoting tourism.

Instead, 100% of TDT proceeds would be used as a credit against county residents’ property tax bills.

If adopted, this amendment to HB 1221 would:

Abolish all existing uses of Tourist Development Taxes, including:

· Tourism promotion and advertising

· Beach renourishment and environmental enhancements

· Convention centers

· Professional and spring training sports facilities

· Dissolve all county Tourist Development Councils

· Restrict spending of TDT to only existing contracts in force as of January 1, 2025

· Require counties to reduce their property tax levy starting FY 2026-2027 by the amount of TDT collected

· Allow tourism promotion agencies to be reauthorized only if funded from non-TDT sources

This is a direct attack on Florida’s tourism industry and the millions of Floridians whose jobs, businesses, and communities rely on visitor spending.

We expect today’s committee meetings to be the final opportunity for public comment against the dangerous proposals in HB 1221 and HB 7033.

It’s never been more important for anyone receiving Tourist Development Taxes to communicate immediately to their Senate and House members to the importance of Tourism Promotion Taxes. Please get the word out to your industry and all partners receiving TDT in your community.

Key Talking Points:

1. This Amendment Would Eliminate Florida’s Competitive Advantage.

· Florida’s economy is built on tourism. TDT fuels marketing efforts that generate more than 2 million jobs and $124 billion in annual visitor spending.

· Without marketing, Florida loses visitors, loses jobs, and loses tax revenue. Neighboring states will gladly take our place.

2. TDT is Not a Burden on Residents—it’s a Benefit.

· Visitors pay TDT, not residents. These dollars come from out-of-state guests and are reinvested to attract more.

· Eliminating TDT uses for marketing means residents will pay more in taxes over time, not less.

3. This Would Devastate Small Counties.

· Large counties might survive by finding alternative funding—but small, rural counties will lose their only reliable tool to compete for visitors.

· Some counties rely on TDT for over 30% of their total property tax value. This bill cuts that economic lifeline.

4. Dissolving TDCs Silences Local Voices.

· TDCs ensure accountability, oversight, and community involvement.

· This amendment replaces local governance with forced mandates from Tallahassee.

5. The Savings to Residents Are Minimal—The Damage is Massive.

· The average TDT is a tiny fraction of property tax revenues. (Statewide average: 11.3% of property taxes.)

· Wiping out TDT will do virtually nothing to reduce property taxes—but it will cost billions in lost economic activity.

6. This is Not a Tax Cut—It’s a Job Killer.

· TDT is a self-imposed tax by the lodging industry to grow visitation.

· Every dollar of TDT generates many more dollars in local sales, job creation, and tax revenue.

7. We Don’t Need to Break What’s Working.

· Florida just celebrated its sixth consecutive record-breaking year in tourism.

· Now is the time to invest, not abandon, what’s powering our economy.

2. What is your favorite job you’ve had in the industry and why? Believe it or not my favorite job in the industry was when I worked in the custodial department at Disney World. I loved the freedom to walk my assigned area throughout my shift and talk to guests all day. It was so fun to watch people enjoy their vacation and to see how happy they were to be at Disney!

3. What is the most rewarding aspect of working in/for the attraction industry? I love watching guests from all around the world have fun! Seeing guests smile, laugh, and enjoy their time at an attraction is priceless!

4. What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time? Eating out, watching movies and football, and hanging out with my family!

5. Aside from Florida, what is your dream vacation destination and why? Anywhere there are mountains and fall! Yellowstone National Park is one of my favorite places on the planet because you can fish, hike, raft, and see incredible wildlife.

2025 Professional Development and Employee Advancement Grant Program Applications Now Being Accepted

Grant funds are envisioned to increase the ability of FAA member businesses to provide effective professional development programs to their staff. Grant funds are not intended to replace existing funding sources, but rather to expand them. Grant applications will be assessed based on their long-term impact internally and the consequential impact on the guest experience. Grant funds may not be used toward registration for the FAA’s Annual Conference.

This grant program will promote the Foundation’s mission to develop the Florida attraction industry’s workforce and prepare for future challenges.

Attendees from across the state gathered to exchange ideas, forge connections, and explore the vibrant history and innovation that make St. Augustine a leader in Florida's attractions industry.

The agenda featured a dynamic mix of updates, expert panels, and interactive roundtables that provided attendees with valuable insights into event development, marketing, and operations.

Diving into Historic St. Augustine’s Event Success

A standout session was the Historic St. Augustine’s Success in Events panel. Moderated by a stellar group of local leaders—including St. Augustine Beach Mayor Dylan Rumrell, former St. Augustine mayor Len Weeks, St. Augustine Amphitheater Director of Public Relations Dianya Markovits, and Ponte Vedra and the Beaches VCB CEO Susan Phillips—the discussion delved into the city's transformation through strategic events like the Nights of Lights and St. Augustine Songwriters Festival. IAAPA Publishes Economic Impact Report for North America Attractions Industry

Inaugural Expedition FAA a Huge Success

The Inaugural Expedition FAA was an enormous success, premiering on Thursday, November 8 at ZooTampa at Lowry Park. The event drew capacity attendance and featured a day filled with informative presentations, engaging discussions, and valuable networking opportunities. FAA members were encouraged to arrive early to explore the award-winning zoo before the start of Expedition FAA.

The event took place in the zoo's Africa realm in Riley's Reserve and kicked off with an informal lunch where Chairman Dan Donovan (Universal Orlando Resort) provided an update on the FAA's strategic plan rollout and the ongoing efforts of the Board of Directors. Bill Lupfer shared insights on the election night results, the contributions made by the Florida Attractions Political Action Committee, and the potential impact of the 2025 Florida Legislature on the industry. Mike Donaldson, Members Services Manager, highlighted upcoming FAA events, including the 2025 Annual Conference scheduled for June 8-11 in Ponte Vedra. Jennifer Berthiaume (Lion Country Safari), Chairman of the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation, announced the opening of the 2025 Scholarship and Grant application period in February. Then Melissa Vogt (Broadway Palm Dinner Theater), Chair of the FAA Board Events Committee, revealed that the next Expedition FAA will take place in St. Augustine in January 2025.

The highlight of the event was a presentation on the rebranding and transformation of ZooTampa. Scott Rose, the COO of ZooTampa, and Kristi Chase Tozer, President of RumbleBuzz Marketing and former CMO of the zoo during its 4-year rebranding process, shared the inspiring story of the zoo's journey from its previous downtown Tampa location to its current home in Lowry Park. Scott discussed how the zoo evolved alongside the city and its residents, while Kristi detailed the rebranding process from start to finish, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagement, long-term planning, and effective internal and external brand communication strategies.

During the recent Expedition FAA event, Scott shared exciting news about the zoo's rebranding efforts, which have sparked a renewed sense of optimism for the future. The zoo has ambitious plans to renovate and update older areas, as well as create new sections that represent different geographic regions and the wildlife they house.

Attendees of the event were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of ZooTampa, where they got a glimpse of the support areas that play a crucial role in caring for the animals. The zoo's dedicated animal team works tirelessly to maintain, rehabilitate, enrich, feed, and curate the wildlife collection with professionalism care.

Following the tour, attendees participated in roundtable discussions on opportunities and considerations of branding. Included were discussions about the creative journey behind FAA’s logo rebrand, effective branding strategies for celebrating business anniversaries and special events, Utilizing mission and vision statements to drive company culture, strengthen your business and encourage customer loyalty, and maximizing brand impact through strategic public relations and community engagement.

A workshop on the Clifton Strengths Survey was also presented, with FAA Chair Dan Donovan presenting each attendee with their personalized survey results. The survey results were discussed in terms of how they can be used to build strong teams and ensure that team members' strengths are effectively utilized in the workplace. The FAA plans to offer more opportunities for members to experience this valuable human resources tool in the coming year.

The event concluded with a gathering at the Boomerang Bar in the Australia realm, where attendees had the chance to unwind and network with fellow FAA friends and colleagues.

2024 General Election Report - Liberty Partners of Tallahassee

The 2024 General Election in Florida delivered big wins for Republicans across the state, as the GOP maintained a supermajority in the Florida Legislature with 28 Republicans in the Senate, while picking up a seat in the House and extending their supermajority to 85-35. Voter turnout played a key role in Republican success, as 78.76% of all registered voters made their voices heard in the General Election – the highest voter turnout since 1992.

While Democrats edged Republicans in vote-by-mail ballots by approximately 200,000, Republicans had over than one million more early voters than Democrats. This was key to Republicans maintaining their supermajority in the Legislature.

One United States Senate race appeared on the ballot, as incumbent U.S. Senator Rick Scott handily defeated former U.S. Representative Debbie Mucarsel-Powell by more than 12%. Of the 28 U.S. House seats that appeared on the General Election ballot, Republicans won 20 seats compared to eight seats won by Democrats.

General Election surprises in the Legislature included the defeat of three House members: Representative Carolina Amesty (R-Orlando), Representative Tom Keen (D-Orlando), and Representative Katherine Waldron (D-Wellington).

With Florida Attractions Political Action Committee (FAPAC) supported candidates winning each of their 22 respective races in the General Election and the House and Senate retaining supermajorities, the attractions industry and the Florida Attractions Association (FAA) governmental affairs team will maintain positive relationships with incumbent legislators and create new relationships with newly-elected legislators.

During our meetings with newly-elected officials and incumbents, we reminded them of the value that tourism brings to our state and the unique experience that FAA member attractions offer. By making connections with legislators prior to the beginning of the 2025 Legislative Session and encouraging them to visit their local attractions, we are ensuring that FAA and its members will have a seat at the table when decisions are made in Tallahassee that would affect the tourism industry.

Florida Attractions Political Action Committee Hits 100% Win Rate

18 Senate seats were contested in the General Election, while one seat was unopposed in both the Primary and General Election, and one was unopposed following the Primary Election in August. In the General Election, Republicans won 14 out of 18 contested seats. The Senate will welcome eight new members on November 19, including five Republicans and three Democrats.

105 seats in the Florida House were up for grabs in the General Election. Republicans won 85 of these seats, including flipping a seat, to maintain their supermajority in the House. Of the remaining 35 seats, eight were unopposed in the Primary and General Election and six were unopposed following the August Primary Election. There will be many new faces in the Florida House, as 30 Republicans and 10 Democrats will serve in the chamber for the first time.

The Florida Attractions Political Action Committee (FAPAC) supported 22 candidates during the 2024 General Election, including 15 candidates in House races and seven candidates in Senate races. Candidates supported by the FAPAC won all 22 races for a win percentage of 100%.

I hope this message finds you safe and secure. Our state recently faced the challenge of Hurricane Milton, following closely behind Hurricane Helene. The impact of these storms has been significant, with many Floridians experiencing devastating losses in terms of lives, property, and businesses.

During the peak of Hurricane Milton, 87 FAA member attractions were forced to close their doors. While most have since reopened, there are still 12 members who remain closed, including Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater and Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, both of which had already endured an extended closure due to Hurricane Helene.

In response to the challenges we face, the state of Florida is offering no-interest bridge loans through the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program.

Living in the Sunshine State presents its own set of challenges, and last week's display of Mother Nature's fury undoubtedly ranks high on that list. While most of us have returned to our daily routines, some of our members have suffered damage that will require extensive repairs. The FAA recently provided an update on our members' operating status and that report is included below in this newsletter. We are proud of the mutual assistance our members have offered each other during this time of crisis.

Our inaugural Expedition FAA was unfortunately postponed due to Helene, but we are pleased to announce that it has been rescheduled for Thursday, November 7 at ZooTampa at Lowry Park. Registrants have been notified of the new date.

In August, your Board of Directors convened in Tampa to further our strategic plan and develop programs tailored to meet the needs of our members. Part of this work was refreshing our mission statement and core values. One of our values is building a strong and supportive community, fostering collaboration. To spotlight this value, we introduced a new networking initiative, Mystery Connect. This new program was scheduled to launch last week, but due to the intervening storm, we'll delay that until November. While Mystery Connect is currently available to our attraction members, we anticipate extending this program to our associate members next year.

We extend our gratitude to the members who participated in September's Florida Attractions District Days. Showcasing our attractions to members of the Florida Legislature is an excellent way to establish connections with our elected officials. As the General Election approaches on November 5, I urge our members to exercise their right to vote.

I appreciate the trust you have placed in the Florida Attractions Association. Your membership serves as a source of inspiration for the Board as we strive to continuously refine and enhance our association to better serve your needs. It is a shared responsibility that we all bear for the strength and resilience of our industry.

Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on much of the southeastern US and Florida was not spared. During the storm, the FAA maintained a database of our member attractions operating status, based on reports we received directly from our members or from their websites or social media posts. This information was shared with the public on FloridaAttractions.com, with VISIT FLORIDA for their tourism status website and visitors to Florida’s Welcome Centers.

Today, four of our attraction members remain closed as the continue repairs and cleanup from Helene.

Dear valued partners,

Clearwater Marine Aquarium was severely impacted by Hurricane Helene on Sept. 26 as it hit our waterfront facility with high storm surge and strengthened to become a category 4 storm causing widespread damage across Clearwater Beach, Tampa Bay, Florida and the Southeast U.S.

During Hurricane Helene, CMA was flooded with over 4 feet of water, lost power for an extended period, and vital equipment was damaged by the salt water, including some of our life support systems (LSS). Lab equipment, laundry machines, air compressors, and other essential tools were also lost or damaged. Elevators were flooded and many lower areas sustained water damage. Our team is working diligently to make repairs and get everything operational as quickly as possible. CMA staff volunteers have been assessing damage, cleaning, drying equipment, transporting animal food and supplies, and continuing to provide daily animal care.

Due to these impacts and the damage to our surrounding community in Clearwater Beach, we remain closed until further notice.

Beginning August 20, the Florida Attractions Association will sponsor Florida Attractions District Days, encouraging our members to invite members of their country’s Legislative Delegation and other public officials to visit their attraction for an educational tour.

For our industry-

Your county’s Legislative delegation will convene with lawmakers from around the state for the 2025 Legislative Session in Tallahassee on Tuesday March 4. During Session may be the worst time to make an initial contact with your Legislator. Your contact with your local Legislators now will create relationships that can yield precious dividends to your attraction AND our industry. Once the hectic days of Session begin, your elected official’s attention will be stretched in multiple directions – all at the same time!

This isn’t political – it’s advocacy

The IRS allows every business, including 501(c)(3)s to participate in activities such as Florida Attractions District Days:

“Organizations may, however, involve themselves in issues of public policy without the activity being considered as lobbying. For example, organizations may conduct educational meetings, prepare, and distribute educational materials, or otherwise consider public policy issues in an educational manner without jeopardizing their tax-exempt status."

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of the passing of our esteemed friend and colleague, Richard Jackson. Richard was a distinguished figure in the attraction industry, having served as the FAA Chairman of the Board from 1994 to 1995. His dedication and influence within the Florida attractions industry were unparalleled.

As a member of the Florida Attractions Association, Jackson was renowned for his unwavering commitment to promoting creativity and excellence in our field. Throughout his career, he held leadership positions at VISIT FLORIDA, Universal Orlando, and IAAPA, leaving a lasting impact on all those he encountered.

Beyond his professional achievements, Richard Jackson was admired for his integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment to his family and friends. His infectious smile, quick wit, and compassion for others were just a few of the qualities that defined his legacy.

We mourn the loss of a true industry leader and friend. Richard Jackson's presence will be sorely missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved Cindy and their children Lindsey and Adam during this difficult time.

FAA's Logo Refreshed for 75th Anniversary & Beyond

The Florida Attractions Association (FAA) marked its 75th anniversary with a strategic rebranding initiative to ensure its future relevance and impact. At the 2023 FAA Board Retreat, a Brand ID & Value Proposition Committee was formed to attract and retain the next generation of industry leaders. In partnership with a third party agency, insights were gathered through surveys and interviews that highlighted networking as a critical membership benefit, and praised the Attraction Share program for its value. Results also showcased a desire for enhanced communication and professional development to attract and retain the next generation of industry leaders and a resource hub to better navigate industry challenges.

In response, FAA has committed to modernizing the organization's brand and communication strategies. This includes providing essential services, legislative updates, professional development, and improved networking opportunities. A new visual identity was created and new communication pillars are being developed to reflect these changes, embodying inclusivity, collaboration and unity. This rebranding positions the Florida Attractions Association as a forward-thinking, inclusive and dynamic organization ready to meet the evolving needs of members today and in the future. I am deeply honored to assume the role of Chair of the Florida Attractions Association Board of Directors for the next twelve months. I stand humbly on the shoulders of distinguished and passionate leaders who have held this position before me.

During our recent annual conference, I shared my commitment to fostering workplace engagement, which I define as the dedication, involvement, and enthusiasm employees bring to their roles and organizations. Research consistently shows that higher levels of engagement correlate with increased performance, productivity, retention, and overall well-being.

One effective approach to fostering engagement is identifying a need within our workplaces—or our Association—and utilizing our unique strengths to address it. Each of us possesses distinct abilities, and we thrive when given opportunities to apply these strengths meaningfully.

In our inaugural board meeting under my leadership, we dedicated time to exploring our individual and collective strengths. Over the coming year, we will harness these strengths to advance our strategic goals and empower every member of our Association to achieve excellence—our shared mission.

NEW FAA Events Coming this Fall!

Part of the strategic plan that came out of the Board of Directors Retreat last summer was revamping our programs and events to better serve our members. Since then, our Programing and Events Committee has been hard at work reading surveys, listening to feedback from our membership on current programming, hearing ideas for new programming and strategizing together on how to elevate your member experience. The common themes we heard that were most important were networking, professional development, educational resources, and engagement.

I know many of you have attended and are familiar with FAA’s Regional Networking Nights as well as the Attraction Regional Forums. These events have been really wonderful in bringing members in each region together, but another repeat comment is that members wanted more face-to-face opportunities outside of their regions with other attractions throughout the state, and more than just once a year.

We heard you, and while many strategic plans take years to complete, we didn’t want to waste any time. We have come up with a new event that we plan to bring you three times per year that will incorporate everyone’s favorite elements of our current programming and add what you all wanted more of – networking, professional development, education and engagement with attractions across the state.

These will be half day events that will include FAA updates, incredible guest speakers, everyone’s favorite round table sessions, networking and an exclusive attraction experience that is sure to be the icing on the cake of an already awesome day! On behalf of the FAA Staff, Board of Directors and the Programming and Events Committee, we are so excited to share with you this all-new event launching this fall that will allow you, our members, to learn, connect, and explore - Expedition FAA!

We are looking forward to sharing more details soon, but be sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, September 26^th and plan to join us at ZooTampa at Lowry Park for the inaugural Expedition FAA!

Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis Honors FAA’s 75th

In recognition of the FAA’s 75^th Anniversary, Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis issued an Official Proclamation to honor the historic milestone. The Proclamation was prominently displayed in the Networking Center during the 2024 Annual Conference. The FAA is deeply appreciative of this distinguished honor from our state’s Chief Financial Officer.

Jimmy Patronis is a native Floridian born and raised in Panama City. He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2006 to 2014, representing his hometown region in the Florida Panhandle. He was appointed to serve on Florida’s Public Service Commission, as well as the Constitution Revision Commission. He has served as Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, a Cabinet-level officer since 2017. Florida's CFO oversees the state's accounting and auditing functions and unclaimed property, monitors the investment of state funds and manages the deferred compensation program and risk management program for the state.

How long have you been in the attractions industry?

What is your favorite job you’ve had in the industry and why?

My Favorite role was being a part of the Opening Team of Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Not only did it teach me project management, but it allowed me to learn more about Disney as a whole including a beloved set of characters in a whole new land. It truly transformed my life in the best of ways.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working in/for the attraction industry?

For me, being with the Guests and watching their reactions to what we have all around us. The theme park industry allows Guests to leave their current world and be immersed into a whole new type of fun! This energizes me and helps me ideate different experiences we can help bring to life.

What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

I love visiting the attractions here in Florida with my family. Recently, we just did a St Augustine beach trip and because of FAA, we saw things we had never seen before. When we’re not traveling, you can find me with a book in hand sitting by the pool.

Aside from Florida, what is your dream vacation destination and why?

I really want to go see Paris. To visit the museums, be immersed in their culture and history and of course visit Disneyland Paris!

Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation Awards Five Professional Development Grants

During the 2024 Annual Conference, the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation awarded five Professional development Grants to FAA Member businesses to assist in the funding of their internal staff development and training.

IMAG History and Science Center, Fort Myers - $2,500

IMAG History and Science Center has over 100 aquatic animals in 25,000 gallons of habitats, which are maintained by a small staff. This grant will provide training for 5 staff members in Life Support Operator Level 1 and Water Quality Technician Level 1 to improve their skills in caring for the animals and their habitats.

ZooTampa at Lowry Park - $2,500

The grant given to Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park will provide interpretive training to their zoo staff. Specifically, they will be participating in the Certified Interpretive Guide course offered by the National Association for Interpretation. This course is designed for interpreters who lead programs and want to deepen their understanding of interpretation fundamentals. This training will equip participants with the tools to create enriching interpretive content and programming, ultimately enhancing the guest experience. The grant will provide training for 10 of the zoo staff members.

St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum- $2,100

Our grant to the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum will help three employees in the Interpretative Department enhance their communication skills and create more meaningful experiences for visitors. The Museum recently approved a five-year Interpretative Plan to improve the experience for the over 240,000 guests who visit annually. The employees will receive certification from the National Association for Interpretation to sharpen their skills and improve the overall visitor experience.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, Jupiter - $2,500

Sensory Sensitivity Mornings at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is a special event for kids with sensory sensitivities, including those on the autism spectrum and their families. They can enjoy hands-on activities in a quiet setting at the Lighthouse. The grant will help the Lighthouse educate staff on how to interact with and teach individuals with autism. They are working towards becoming a Certified Autism Center with specialized training and certification.

Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota - $2,425

The Ringling’s grant will allow one of their HR professionals to attend a Disney Institute professional development course: Disney’s Approach to Employee Engagement. Disney Institute teaches professionals business insights and the applicable methods that can help organizations prosper.

Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation 2024 Scholarship Recipients

During the 2024 FAA Annual Conference, the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation (FASF) awarded four, $2000 scholarships to employees of FAA member businesses. Since its creation in 2014, the FASF has awarded $99,975 in scholarships and grants.

Yuliia Stasiuk | Lion Country Safari | Capt. Rick Soverns Memorial Scholarship

Yuliia Stasiuk is continuing her education and pursuing a degree in hospitality management with a focus on sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation initiatives while working as a member of the team at Lion Country Safari. Her long-term career goal is to become a hospitality manager specializing in eco-friendly resorts or wildlife tourism destinations so that she can continue contributing to the preservation of wildlife and habitats for future generations.

Erionna Perez | Funspot Amusement Theme Park | Barbara Kenney Scholarship

Erionna Perez is working toward a degree in Hospitality Management through the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She is an employee of FunSpot Kissimmee where she is working towards becoming a department manager. She is a member of the Rosen College of Hospitality Honors Society and made the Dean’s List at UCF three semesters running. Her ultimate goal is to continue her work in theme parks once she graduates.

Justin Petrak | SeaWorld Orlando | Chad Middleton Memorial Scholarship

Justin Petrak is a self-proclaimed animal lover, who started volunteering with cats and dogs nearly 10 years ago. He has taken his love for animals and is pursuing a degree in Organizational Management with a concentration in Zoo and Aquarium Management. He currently works as part of the SeaWorld Orlando Rescue Team helping to rehab and return manatees and sea turtles to the wild. Upon graduating in 2025, Justin plans on working with elephants at Busch Gardens Tampa.

Hailey Osborn | Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts | Arthur Hertz Memorial Scholarship

Hailey Osborn is currently an employee of Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts as a member of their Production Crew while pursuing her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of Central Florida. She is studying scenic and production design which she is hoping to parlay into a career with theme parks so she can use this platform to tell immersive stories through the art of scenic and video designs.

FAA Honors Three Outstanding Members

Our Annual Conference celebrated the contributions of three of the FAA’s many outstanding members in a long history of selfless dedication and service.

Outstanding Attraction Member of the Year – Cameron O’Connell

Many of us in the attractions industry have dedicated decades to our careers, climbing the ladder to positions of leadership. Some of us have transitioned from other industries, bringing unique perspectives and skills that seamlessly translate to the attractions sector.

This year's recipient of the Outstanding Attraction Member of the Year award exemplifies this journey. After joining a Florida attraction, he quickly distinguished himself through his dedication to his employer and his willingness to share his expertise in marketing and sales, honed over many years.

His natural leadership abilities and commitment to serving his fellow industry professionals led to his appointment to the FAA Board of Directors. With humility and a strong presence, he continues to serve the industry today.

Having transitioned from the sports world to the attractions industry, he embodies selfless leadership. It is with great honor that I announce the 2024 Outstanding Attraction Member of the Year: Cameron O'Connell.

Outstanding Associate Member of the Year – John Penney

When the FAA issues a call for relevant and timely insights and knowledge regarding marketing attractions, this member eagerly answers the call. With decades of experience in advertising and marketing Florida attractions, this individual has a rich history of success.

With success comes responsibility, and he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to serving his fellow industry professionals through his dedication to his attraction clients and his willingness to share his expertise with FAA members. Whether leading Breakout Sessions, facilitating Roundtable discussions, or generously providing financial support as an event sponsor, this dog’s bark leaves a lasting impression on our members.

In recognition of his unwavering support of the industry, I am pleased to announce that the 2024 Outstanding Associate Member of the Year is John Penney of BlackDog Advertising.

Chairman’s Award – Sonny Flynn

This year's recipient of the Chairman's Award has demonstrated exceptional leadership within her community. Her compassion extends not only to her fellow leaders, but also to the well-being of the most overlooked and marginalized creatures in the animal kingdom.

Driven by her love for all creatures, big and small, she established a unique attraction that showcases the wonders of nature while providing care for animals in need of rehabilitation. Unfortunately, her dream was recently shattered by a devastating fire that claimed the lives of some of her beloved animals and forced her business to close its doors.

However, true to the saying "you can't keep a good woman down," she refused to be defeated. Instead, she assessed the situation, swiftly devised a plan to provide temporary shelter for her wildlife and began the process of rebuilding her business.

Her unwavering strength and resilience in the face of adversity have earned her the admiration and support of many in her community, as well as those gathered here today. In recognition of her remarkable generosity, fortitude, and empathy, it is my honor to present the 2024 Chairman's Award to Sonny Flynn.

Dear fellow FAA Members,

It seems like only yesterday when I had the honor and privilege or receiving the FAA gavel from my friend John Dent and began my year serving as Chairman of the FAA. But a year has passed, and our time-honored tradition will continue later today when I have the honor of passing this gavel to our next Chairman, Dan Donovan.

I have been involved with the FAA for 25 years. There are many words that come to mind when I think of the hundreds of FAA members I’ve met, dozens of attractions I’ve visited, and thousands of hours invested in my professional development and networking opportunities provided by the FAA.

Words such as Family. Caring. Concern. Helper. Sharing. Professional. Our association culture is unique and is greater than the sum of all of us. It is the greatest asset we possess. One that has endured the test of time, the dynamic forces of our world, the fickle demands of our guests, the development of our staff and the lightning speed of technology. Our FAA culture is to be protected and celebrated. One recent attendee to our annual conference described it like this – an FAA meeting was less like a conference and more like a revival!

Like our FAA members – attractions, Associate members and DMOs, the past 12 months have continued the necessary evolution required to thrive and it is incumbent on us as leaders of Florida’s attractions industry not to simply embrace the change, but be leaders in it, and to be the catalyst that produces it.

As it relates to the FAA, this change has affected us all this year. In an efficient and effective Strategic Planning Session our Board of Directors spent two days wrestling with creating the next chapter in the FAA story. Our planning session ended with the development of five working groups each tasked with renewing and recharging aspects of our association.

Two FAA events were retired this year. Our winter Attraction Regional Forums and fall Networking Nights required a fresh vision. Our new FAA event, Expedition FAA coming this fall will combine the best elements of these two events with hours of professional development combined with an evening networking event and back-of-the-house tour of an FAA member attraction.

The introduction of a fall and winter online webinar series delivered twelve unique education and development programs online directly to you and over 200 FAA members participated in this new, free program.

Our Annual Conference was refreshed with more educational content, more topics, more speakers, more networking time than any conference in our history.

Our Board continues its work to create more opportunities for Board members to engage with our FAA members, more occasions for our members to volunteer and serve on committees, better communication methods, a quarterly e-newsletter, a stronger advocacy effort and refreshing of our FAA brand and value proposition.

It has been a year of change and we’re just getting started.

I want to thank our 2023-2024 Board of Directors for their support and involvement in serving the FAA. (anyone else to thank). Finally, and most importantly, I want to thank our FAA Members who have made the commitment to join, participate and serve their fellow attraction professionals.

I think back to how our members and leaders of the past have served us. For 75 years, men and women in Florida’s attractions industry have selflessly served the collective. Each generation believes they are living in our industry’s “golden age.” We should approach each day with wisdom, courage, and responsibility on our shoulders, for today we stand on the shoulders of those before us who dreamed of an association of Florida attractions. Certainly, we have far surpassed their wildest dream. Today, we must continue that tradition so that in the year 2099, 75 years from now, that generation of attraction leaders may also say “we stand on the shoulders of giants.”

FAA Attraction Member Spotlight - Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the area's rich history. Built in 1860, the lighthouse stands at 105 feet tall and has been fully restored to its original glory. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a panoramic view of the surrounding area, including the beautiful Jupiter Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean.

In addition to the lighthouse itself, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse also features a museum that showcases the history of the area and provides information on the lighthouse's role in maritime navigation. The museum features exhibits on the lighthouse keepers, shipwrecks, and local wildlife. From the FAA Archives – May 23, 1950

If you thought debates about taxes or license plate slogans is a modern phenomenon, you would be mistaken. At the semi-annual meeting of the Florida Attractions Association held at Silver Spring on May 23, 1950, there was much to say about taxes, license plates – and a few other issues, too!

Though the state of Florida had been issuing license plates since 1918, the first year Florida’s plate had a slogan, “Sunshine State” was in 1949. In 1950, there was a move to change the slogan to “Keep Florida Green” demonstrating the beginning of the environmental movement. The

membership of the FAA opposed the move to change the license plate slogan, but lost that battle and for one year, 1951, the state’s plates carried the “Keep Florida Green” slogan. A year later, they returned to Sunshine State and that has been the predominant slogan used for the last 75 years.

The FAA membership also voted to oppose the state’s 3% sales tax be imposed on the admission of amusements such as attractions. In a related position, FAA members were encouraged to contact their US Senators and Representatives to oppose a Federal admissions and transportation tax.

Hertz U Drive became one of the FAA’s early advertising partners and Silver Springs offered to turn over 100 of their sign boards (billboards) to promote FAA members for a month during the summer. Wasn’t the art on the Silver Springs Billboard foretelling?

And that was the FAA in spring 1950.

World Traveler Doug Lansky to Keynote FAA’s 75th Annual Conference

Doug Lansky wowed attendees at our 2016 Annual Conference in West Palm Beach and will be making an encore appearance for this year’s conference traveling all the way from Stockholm Sweden.

Doug Lansky has been living abroad and traveling for the last nearly 20 years in over 120 countries. He is the author of 10 books, including 2 for Lonely Planet and 3 for Rough Guides, had a weekly syndicated travel column in over 40 newspapers for five years, hosted a Travel Channel show, served as a correspondent for Public Radio’s Savvy Traveler show, served as travel editor for Scandinavian Airlines inflight magazine for three years and contributed to publications such as National Geographic Traveler, Reader’s Digest, Esquire, Men’s Journal, The Guardian, National Geographic Adventure, Huffington Post and Skift.

Florida’s Silver Springs – Our grand finale evening

Following the passing of the historic FAA gavel from now Chair Cindy Stavely (St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum) to our new Chairman Dan Donovan (Universal Orlando Resort), we’ll gather at one of our association’s founding members, Florida’s Silver Springs for an enchanting evening at this Florida legacy attraction.

Silver Springs was one of Florida’s original tourist attractions (if not THE original). After the American Civil War, the springs began to attract tourists from the North via steamboats up the Silver River. Silver Springs gained national attention through journals and guidebooks and became a mandatory stop on the "grand tour" of Florida.

In the late 1870s, the glass-bottom boat and the glass-bottom rowboat were introduced to take visitors on the river to give them a unique view of the springs. In the 1890s, commercial-sized glass-bottom boats were developed and placed in operation.

We’ll gather at this historic place and enjoy a sumptuous buffet dinner and drinks, surrounded by the natural beauty of Florida, serenaded by music and venture into the river on one of the world-famous glass-bottom boats. We’ll honor Florida’s rich attraction history as we brave the new frontier as leaders of Florida’s attraction community.

We’re just days away from launching registration for our 75^th Anniversary Annual Conference. I’m excited about the lineup this year – the largest variety of breakout sessions, roundtables, and general session speakers in FAA history.

For our conference theme, I’ve chosen “Past Pioneers, Future Frontiers”. Since the FAA’s founding, we’ve all been pioneers, building on the work of those who preceded us as we move into the unknown of cultural and technological evolution.

Our Education Committee has been working hard to piece our education programming together and they’ve done a remarkable job. Mary Altman, Chair – Wounded Warrior Project (formerly World Golf Hall of Fame); Keith Clark – Flamingo Gardens; Felicia Cook – Marineland Dolphin Adventure; Kelli King – IMAG History & Science Center; and Samantha Palmer – Historic Tours of Flagler College have served you very well.

Our three General Session will tackle issues such as managing change with a sense of humor, the future of Florida’s transportation infrastructure, and world-renowned travel expert Doug Lansky who was a hit at our 2016 Annual Conference will be joining us from his home in Stockholm, Sweden.

Attention Small Business Owners: Have you heard of the Corporate Transparency Act?

The Corporate Transparency Act (“CTA”) went into effect on January 1, 2024 to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The CTA requires businesses to disclose specific ownership information to the federal government, specifically the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network ("FinCEN"). If the entity was formed before January 01, 2024, the Beneficial Ownership Information Report ("BOIR”) must be submitted before December 31, 2024. If the entity was formed on or after January 01, 2024, business owners have only 90 days to file the BOIR. Additionally, there is also a strict requirement to update BOIRs promptly to reflect any changes to original filings.

Under the CTA, beneficial owners are individuals that have direct or indirect ownership stake in an entity. This means any individual that owns at least 25% of the entity, has control over the equity, or is in a position to have major influence on the entity’s operations or reporting decisions. Specifically, some the information that must be disclosed for each beneficial owner includes the owners’ names, addresses, dates of birth, identification number, as well as entity information filed in the state in which the entity operates.

Unless exempt under the CTA, all types of entities operating or doing business in the United States, big or small, are impacted and failure to timely comply can lead to penalties such as fines of $500 per day or criminal penalties up to $10,000 and/or two years in prison.

It is important to note that the recent launch of the CTA has resulted in significant uproar in the business and legal community and the law itself has been challenged. Although there are ongoing challenges to this law working their way through the court system, there is still an obligation for compliance for the majority of business owners. It is vital for all business owners to take the CTA seriously and make sure they have properly filed the required information prior to the applicable deadline. Navigating the nuisances of the CTA can be tricky and overwhelming and it is advisable to contact an attorney to minimize reporting errors that could create legal exposure.

The earliest document the FAA possess in its archives relates to an “organizational meeting” held three years before the associate was formally incorporated. A group of attraction industry leaders met at Marineland. This organizational meeting involved the creation of a new alliance. Dick Pope, Sr. (Cypress Garden) suggested the name of this group should be the Florida Attractions Association. The group

addresses a number of steps to be completed in the creation of the FAA - the creation of a “constitution” and bylaws, establishment of committees, election of officers, and a code of ethics.

Previously, this group of attraction leaders met as a committee under the auspices of the FPPRA – known today as the FPRA or the Florida Public Relations Association. The group discussed the potential of membership of the Okefenokee Swamp, which straddled the Florida-George line, but determined the swap was primarily a Georgia attraction.

There was conversation about the State Advertising Commission – the predecessor to today’s VISIT FLORIDA – but even in 1946, it was a target to be eliminated from the state’s budget! Some things never change.

How long have you been in the attractions industry?

I started working in hospitality in college as a Campus Sales Representative for Eastern Airlines. I then worked in several positions within an Orlando-based Receptive Tour Operator before joining Universal Orlando in 1997.

What is your favorite job you’ve had in the industry and why?

I am a proponent of “job crafting” and helping people navigate to the intersection of their role (what they do) and their soul (their natural talents). My current role leading Talent Orchestration is now my favorite, as I get to do what I do best and help others do the same.

What is the most rewarding aspect of working in/for the attraction industry?

I was in a bank recently and thought “How boring would this be?!”. The best part of being in our industry is that we help bring families closer together through shared experiences that they will remember for a lifetime. Additionally, it is fun!

What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

I am currently pursuing a graduate degree and enjoy learning. When not working on projects for my job or school, I enjoy long walks listening to podcasts and we love traveling as a family to Europe once every year. I am also enjoying being a “Granddad” to my daughter’s adorable dachshund Avon Barksdale.

Aside from Florida, what is your dream vacation destination and why?

As a family we have traveled to Europe on several occasions. Our favorite spot so far has been Paris. Future destinations include the South of France and Northern Italy. I’d also like to go to Austria and Switzerland around Christmas and visit the markets.

Among FAA’s earliest Associate members is FPIS, Inc. Brochure Distribution and Travel Marketing, based in Ocoee, Florida. FPIS was founded by President Betty Pratt in 1967, and the company is unique as it is three generations strong.

FPIS has been a leading distributor of brochures of our Florida-based attractions not only in the Sunshine State but in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. FPIS designs, builds and installs custom brochure displays and prides itself on beautiful product displays for your location. If you live in Central Florida, you have most likely seen an FPIS service truck on the roadway.

FPIS, Inc. is very much a family owned and operated business with Betty Pratt, President; her daughter Linda Higgins as co-owner, and Linda’s daughter Lauren Murphy as Vice President. Lauren’s father Michael Middleton is also Vice President and has worked in the company since 1980. Attendees of previous FAA Annual Conferences have become well acquainted with the entire FPIS family who attend each Conference.

The Florida Attractions Association has awarded the prestigious Associate Member of the Year to recipients Betty Pratt in 1989, Linda Higgins in 2009, and Lauren Murphy in 2010. Additionally, Linda and Lauren chaired the FAA’s Silent Auction Committee for many years.

The only job I have had in the Attractions Industry is with ZooTampa, so that would be my favorite.

The ability to create impact & memories for members & guests thru experiential activities, experiences & tours.

4. What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

Visiting & supporting my fellow attraction properties throughout the state of Florida.

5. Aside from Florida, what is your dream vacation destination and why?

I have always wanted to stay in an overwater villa in the French Polynesia, thanks to the commercials airing on television.

FAA Members are invited to share their FAA story with their fellow members - how the association we share, colleagues we meet and experiences we live benefit one another.

In the dynamic world of attraction ownership, where every twist and turn brings new challenges and opportunities, I found solace and inspiration in the embrace of a community that became my second family – an association of friends and like-minded leaders who shared my passion for excellence and innovation- the Florida Attractions Association.

My journey with this extraordinary association began as a tentative step into uncharted territory. As one of the owners and CEO of Sawgrass Recreation Park, I often found myself immersed in the day-to-day demands of running a successful business. However, there was a longing for connection, a desire to share experiences and insights with those who understood the unique challenges of our industry.

The first time I attended an Annual Conference almost 14 years ago, I was met with warmth and enthusiasm. It was not merely a gathering of professionals; it was a reunion of kindred spirits. As attraction owners and tourism industry support businesses, we shared a language that went beyond business jargon – a language of passion, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the magic we create within our attractions. I came back to my office and had notebooks full of ideas and so much work to do!

The camaraderie that blossomed within this association went far beyond the confines of conference rooms and seminars. Late-night conversations over shared experiences and laughter forged bonds that transcended professional titles. We became friends, confidantes, and a support system for one another in a way that only those walking similar paths could understand. Here I found individuals who became my mentors, friends and even business partners in other endeavors.

Professionally, the impact of this association on my journey as an attraction owner has been nothing short of transformative. The wealth of knowledge shared during roundtables, conferences and networking nights opened my eyes to innovative strategies and industry trends that I might have overlooked. Every conference became a chance to be with our "family" again. I loved how everyone was willing to open up and share successes and sometimes failures so that their knowledge would benefit others. I quickly found myself doing the same. I was so ready to take a call at my office and spend time helping others who were facing challenges or needed advice. It is so rare in my other professional avenues to be able to share a coffee with another airboat park owner who knows the responsibility of caring for alligators and reptiles, truly unique to my time spent with FAA.

The positive ripple effect of this association reached our operational support and supply chains. We have found brochure distribution, print solutions, store merchandise, signage, marketing tools and more with the help of our associate members who are so closely tied to our industry. We now look to FAA associates first for our business solutions in whatever we need.

I am so proud of FAA for taking strides in Tallahassee with advocacy for our industry and for our attractions. Over the past decade we have become a collective voice, advocating for policies that support the growth and sustainability of attractions from every corner of our state. I have attended Tourism Day 10 times and have traveled separately to Tallahassee and DC on many occasions to meet with legislators. Thanks to FAA our park gained the confidence to host State Representatives and Senators to our park so they could meet our staff. I am so grateful to Jennifer Green and her team at Liberty Partners of Tallahassee for their guidance and advice as our attraction has had to navigate several legislative issues and hurdles. I am proud to say we were successful- and we have continued our commitment to advocacy to ensure we are always working hard to protect the interests of attractions and small business owners alike.

As I reflect on the time spent with this association, I am filled with gratitude for the personal and professional growth it has facilitated. It is not just a means to professionally network; it is a family that celebrates our victories, supports us through challenges, and inspires us to reach new heights. The lessons learned, friendships forged, and the sense of community nurtured within this association have become an integral part of my journey as an attraction owner. I am serving on the board for a second term and my time spent with our leadership has been transformative. I see their passion and drive to work hard to help our association grow and evolve as our industry is ever changing. There are so many more fun changes on the way and I can't wait to see what we will achieve beyond our 75 years.

In the tapestry of my life, the threads of this association are woven with vibrant hues of camaraderie, shared passion, and mutual growth. I am not just an attraction owner; I am a member of a community that continues to shape and enrich my narrative in ways I could have never imagined.

Attraction Member Spotlight - Gatorland

The FAA isn’t the only one celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2024. Gatorland opened its door in 1949 and has welcomed millions of visitors since then. Like many of our more seasoned FAA members, Gatorland’s humble beginnings blossomed over the years. It’s founder, Owen Godwin and his wife Pearl bought a parcel of land on the Orange Blossom Trail near Kissimmee and opened the Florida Wildlife Institute. The park was later named Gatorland and that brand has grown to international recognition over the decades.

The privately-owned park is unique as four generations of the Godwin/McHugh family have poured their lives into making Gatorland stand up in the competitive central Florida tourism marketplace. Over the years, as Florida tourism boomed, the attraction has added to the numerous attractions and exhibits guest can enjoy including the historic Gatorland Railroad, Screamin’ Gator Zip Line, Stompin’ Gator Swamp buggy rides, swamp walks, Gator Jumparoo show and more.

Guests experience a folksy, downhome vibe when visiting Gatorland, reminiscent of a bygone era of Florida culture. The attraction is led by President and CEO Mark McHugh who served as Chairman of the FAA from 2008 until 2010. Gatorland’s Senior Director of Sales, Jennifer Gallagher currently serves on the FAA Board.

Gatorland is a testament to the timeless appeal of Florida’s original roadside attractions. Through the determination and vision of family, the spirit of Owen Godwin lives on in this venerable FAA member attraction.

Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation Update

As the new year begins, we are finalizing plans for our 2024 scholarship and grant application period happening in February. Our scholarships are available exclusively to FAA member business employees and their dependents. In our first decade as a Foundation, we have awarded $80,000 to our industry’s future superstars.

In 2023, the Foundation introduced a new grant program to aid our FAA member businesses with their internal human resources development programs. At annual conference, we awarded over $17,000 in scholarships and grants– a record for a single year. Last month the Foundation held its first online Holiday Silent Auction and raised over $6,600 in funds for our scholarship and grant programs.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of our FAA members!

Happy New Year and welcome to 2024! It seems impossible we’re already almost a quarter of the way through the century! 2024 will be a momentous year. The Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris, we’ll endure our Presidential election, and perhaps most significant, the 75th Anniversary of the Florida Attractions Association!

This newsletter is the result of last August’s FAA Board Retreat and is one of many initiatives underway by our Board and our members. Your Board is divided into five workgroups, each tasked with refinement of an aspect of the FAA: Membership Development, Engagement & Retention; Government Relations; FAA Brand ID & Value Proposition; FAA Programming (Events); and Board Development, Utilization, and Engagement.

We’re reevaluating every activity we’ve been involved in and making adjustments to best position your FAA for the future. For example, FAA member surveys indicated it was time for an event refresh so we retired fall’s Networking Nights and next month’s Attraction Regional Forums. We’re planning an all-new regional event that will combine the best aspects of Networking Nights and Attraction Regional Forums into one event.

Our new Fall Webinar Series was a big hit and you’ll soon receive details on our Spring Webinar Series. The FAA brand refresh project is underway with Rumblebuzz Marketing leading that initiative. Our 2024 Annual Conference (June 9-12, World Equestrian Center, Ocala) will be a time of honoring our 75 years and launching into the future. I know you won’t want to miss this once-in-a lifetime conference.

75 Years of FAA - Looking Back, Looking Ahead

2024 marks the 75^th anniversary of the Florida Attractions Association, which was formally chartered as a corporation on October 14, 1949. This year, we’ll pause to look back on our founding and the people and events which shaped our industry. Folks like our founding members:

Looking back can be instructional, but moving forward is the only path to achieving future success. This year, we’ll do both.

Tell Your Members of Congress to VOTE NO on Amendment #133

As you know, IAAPA continues to support the State Department’s public diplomacy efforts through the J-1 BridgeUSA program (formerly Summer Work Travel Program). In addition to fostering valuable cultural exchange opportunities for international university students, this program provides IAAPA members a critical seasonal workforce option.

Last Friday, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) filed an amendment (Amendment #133) to the FY2024 State Department funding bill that would eliminate all funding for Education and Cultural Exchange programs, which includes the J-1 BridgeUSA program.

If the J-1 program is important to your organization, please contact your members of Congress now using the link below and urge them to oppose Amendment #133. The bill will likely be voted on Thursday, September 28, so it is critical that you reach out to your members of Congress now!

Attention FAA Members Under Regulatory Authority of FDACS – Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection

In response to the drop tower incident in Orlando last year, the Florida Legislature has enacted several amendments to Florida Statute 616.242 - Safety standards for amusement rides. This Industry Correspondence dated June 27, 2023, from Michelle Faulk, Bureau Chief, FDACS – Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection outlines these changes, many of which went into affect on July 1, 2023. The corresponding Bill passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor, can be viewed here.

Michelle Faulk has been particularly responsive to our industry and is available to work with you as you adopt these adjustments. The FAA will continue to work with the FDACS – Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection as they conduct a Rule-Making process to further define Legislative intent.

Announcing the 2023 Scholarship Recipients

2023 Scholarship Recipients

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation (FASF) Board of Directors have selected five Florida-based students as recipients of the 2023 Scholarship. Daniela Botero, Ann Marie Casado, Sophie Duguid, Caleb Jessee and Frank Verney will each receive a check for $2,000 to aid them in their pursuit of their hospitality-related degrees. FASF will be highlighting the scholarship program and acknowledging this year’s recipients at the Florida Attractions 2023 Annual Conference on Monday, June 12 at the Luminary Hotel in Fort Myers.

Daniela Botero is currently working at Universal Orlando Resort as an Event Guide while pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality and Event Management from the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida. Daniela’s career goal is to create new themed experiences using technology to make them more inclusive by different languages or add larger ride restraints. She has a sincere love for theme parks and aims to inspire others in the way she was inspired to enhance the guest experience.

Ann Marie Casado is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Event Management from the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida. She currently works at Universal Studios Florida and Universal Orlando Resort’s Volcano Bay as an Attractions Attendant. Event planning has always been Ann Marie’s passion, and is confident that a degree from the number one hospitality school in the world will prepare her for the challenges she may face in the industry.

Sophie Duguid is earning her degree in Hospitality Management form the university of Central Florida on the Theme Park Track. She has worked several positions at Busch Gardens Tampa including Ride Operator, Trainer, Photographer and Supervisor. Her goal is to become a leader in the theme park industry and ignite the same passion that she has in others. Upon competition of her degree, she would like to continue a leadership role at Busch Gardens.

Caleb Jessee is a member of the team at Universal Orlando Resort where he serves as an Admissions Inventory and Project intern while working on his degree in Hospitality Management from the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida. He is expected to graduate at the end of this year, and when Epic Universe opens up in 2025, he intends to be a part of that park’s opening team as a lead or supervisor in any department.

Frank Verney is an experienced attraction professional serving as Assistant Park Manager at Lion Country Safari. He has worked for Lion Country Safari for more than 10 years and is pursuing a professional development opportunity to grow into a leadership role at his attraction. Frank works to make sure the staff has service training as well as everything they need to enhance the guest experience.

Created in 2013, FASF has awarded scholarships to students pursuing degrees in hospitality-related fields to secure the future of the workforce. Since its inception, the FASF has granted nearly $80,000 in scholarships. Scholarship applicants must be an employee or dependent of an employee of a Florida Attractions Association (FAA) member business, be a Florida resident and a full-time student.

Official Guide to Florida Attractions Ad Sales

We shared with you earlier that the printed version of the Official Guide Map to Florida Attractions has been retired and will not be published. In its place, the FAA will roll out a digital version of the map – the Official Guide to Florida Attractions. The target date for the launch is January 1, 2023.

As a benefit of membership, your attraction will receive a complimentary listing on the new website that will include a customized landing page showcasing your attraction.

In addition to your complimentary listing, a very limited, geo-targeted advertising opportunity will also be available to our individual attraction members (no co-ops or shared ads) in good standing for the first quarter of 2023.Your digital display ad may be displayed in one or more of Florida’s eight vacation regions. Ad rates are generally based on the annual visitation to each region.

Since there will be a limit of three digital display ads per region, per quarter, we anticipate this opportunity will sellout very quickly. Attractions are welcome to choose any or all vacation regions for their display ad to appear in.

Ad sales will be made available beginning at 10am EST on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Ads will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The Official Guide to Florida Attractions ad sales website will show how many ads are available at the time you land on the site, but be mindful, it will not show how many transactions are in process ahead of you and ads will only be reserved after the requested information, including answering basic questions and payment is completed.

The new Official Guide to Florida Attractions will be accessible at FloridaAttractions.com. The FAA will invest in an aggressive SEM campaign.

Since its inception in 2012, the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $60,000 to more than 70 students studying tourism-related careers.

The scholarship program is an exclusive benefit to FAA member businesses – their employees, employee family members, volunteers and interns.

Thanks to the generosity of our Florida Attractions Association members, your Foundation will award several $2,000 scholarships in 2023. Applications will be accepted during the month of February 2023.

Hurricane Ian Hospitality Workers Relief Fund

Hurricane Ian drastically impacted our hospitality industry in southwest Florida. Approximately half the overnight accommodations in Lee County are out of service leaving thousands without jobs. In addition to the loss of life, the situation is compounded as many also lost some - if not all - of their personal property during the storm.

Some of those affected are team members of FAA member attractions.

The Collaboratory (Community Foundation in SW Florida) in conjunction with the local United Way has established a fund to provide support specifically for Fort Myers hospitality workers, including those in the attractions industry.

For decades, the Official Guide Map to Florida Attractions and South Florida Attractions Map have served our attraction members, delivering Florida visitors one of the state’s most popular vacation guides. After decades of publication, numerous circumstances, including changing consumer dynamics and skyrocketing printing costs of large-format maps, the FAA has opted to move the Official Guide Map to Florida Attractions to an online, digital format – Official Guide to Florida Attractions.

This all-new website will include complimentary listings of every FAA Member Attraction, with search capabilities based on location and key word search. Our members will be able to provide links to images and videos and each listing will include a link to our member’s website. The current FloridaAttractions.com site will be repurposed for this new website. The new website will be mobile friendly, be bolstered by advanced SEO and the FAA will dedicate additional resources for SEM. Rack cards will be distributed and transparencies displayed in Florida’s Official Welcome Centers and other locations to direct visitors to this new online vacation planning resource.

An additional feature of the new Official Guide to Florida Attractions will be geofencing of our state providing you the ability to purchase a display ad in your choice of 8 Florida vacation regions. These are limited to 3 unique ads per region and will be contracted on a monthly basis. This very economical advertising opportunity is priced beginning less than $2/day and go up to less than $10/day depending on the region.

More details will be available soon, but we wanted to share with you a sneak peak at this exciting new FAA benefit coming exclusively to FAA members in 2023.

Dear Attraction Colleagues,

With the direct and indirect impacts of Hurricane Ian across Florida, the past week has tested the resolve and resiliency of our industry. Most of our members have been able to cleanup and reopen after Hurricane Ian. Others are still closed, in various stages of disrepair and waiting for water to recede and infrastructure to be restored before beginning their rebuilding process. Our thoughts are with all of you, especially those experiencing personal and professional loss.

The FAA has been closely monitoring our members and updating their status as information is verified. Our members in Southwest Florida have a very challenging time ahead and we’ll continue to monitor their progress and assist as appropriate.

Please refer to FloridaAttractions.org for resources available for you, your family, employees, and your business.

There are numerous relief organizations who are assisting relief and recovery efforts. The Florida Disaster Fund is the State of Florida’s official private fund established to assist Florida’s communities as they respond to and recover during times of emergency or disaster. In partnership with the public sector, private sector and other non-governmental organizations, the Florida Disaster Fund supports response and recovery activities. For Hurricane Ian, all administrative and credit card fees have been waived so that 100% of every donation can be used to help Floridians recover.

The Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation (FASF) Board of Directors have selected five Florida-based students as recipients of the 2022 Scholarship. Aaron Anleu, Katarina Blumenstein, Elliot Fuerst, Lauren Toma and Wing Tung Liu will each receive a check for $2,000 to aid them in their pursuit of their hospitality-related degrees. FASF will be highlighting the scholarship program and acknowledging this year’s recipients at the Florida Attractions 2022 Annual Conference June 12-15 at the West Palm Beach Hilton and Palm Beach Country Convention Center.

Aaron Anleu is currently working at Walt Disney World as a Guest Services Supervisor while pursuing his Ph.D. in Human Capital Management from Bellevue University. His career goal is to continue to inspire and motivate individuals throughout the hospitality industry with his Ph.D. to create not only a better experience for the guests but to create a better working environment for the employees of the hospitality industry.

Katarina Blumenstein is working toward a Bachelor of Science in Entertainment Management from the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She is expecting to graduate in May 2023 and is an employee of Universal Orlando Resort where she works in Entertainment Costuming for marquee events at the park. She is focused on a career as a scenic artist and set dresser and decorator.

Elliot Fuerst is also pursuing a degree in Entertainment Management from UCF. He currently works with the Universal Creative Team at Universal Orlando Resort as a Production Assistant Intern. As a rising senior, he hopes to dive deeper into industry topics by pursuing a leadership role in UCF’s Themed Entertainment Association so he can uplift other students interested in attraction-based careers. His career goal is to become a creative producer for theme park attractions.

Lauren Toma aspires to be part of the team at Universal Orlando Resort that puts on the attraction’s annual Halloween Horror Nights where she was a performer during the 2021 season. She is studying Hospitality Management at UCF where she maintains a 4.0 GPA. While pursuing her degree, she currently works as an event assistant for Whitney Carillon Events where she helps to coordinate events at Four Seasons, Waldorf Astoria and Ritz-Carlton in Orlando.

Wing Tung Liu is also working toward her degree in Hospitality Management from UCF while minoring in Studio Art. She is currently an employee of Universal Resort Orlando where she works as an attraction attendant. Her career goal is to continue working at Universal Orlando and ultimately become a manager in attractions operations or in the hotel industry to provide quality guest experiences.

Since 2013, FASF has awarded scholarships to students pursuing degrees in hospitality-related fields to secure the future of the workforce. Scholarship applicants must be an employee or dependent of an employee of a Florida Attractions Association (FAA) member business, be a Florida resident and a full-time student with a cumulative major GPA of 2.8 or higher.

“With the current workforce challenge, it is more important than ever to make sure we are continuing to invest in the future of our industry by supporting those who are aspiring to make hospitality and tourism their career,” said Chairman of the FASF Board of Directors and Vice President of Double T Multimedia Nick Romeo. “Our goal every year is to find exceptional well-deserving students that will make a positive impact on Florida’s tourism industry and this year was no exception with the remarkable talent and credentials of the students selected.”

As part of the scholarship application, candidates were to demonstrate their desire to pursue a career in hospitality management or related field including (but not limited to) attraction management, tourism marketing, museum studies, hospitality, sports management, entertainment management, event management, zoological/aquaria management, recreation/leisure management. They were also evaluated on their academic performance, personal development, leadership experience, internships and extracurricular activities.

Donate to the Silent Auction

The Silent Auction is an exciting part of our Annual Conference every year, and our 2022 Florida Attractions Annual Conference June 12-15 in West Palm Beach will be no exception!

This fundraiser presented by the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation allows us to maintain a scholarship fund to support employees of FAA member businesses and their dependents enrolled in a hospitality-related major, as well as provide the educational programs and speakers we offer to our members. Our wide range of items to bid on include resort getaways, one-of-a-kind gift items, attraction experiences, and much more!

Please make a contribution by Friday, June 3 to our Silent Auction to help support the Florida Attractions Scholarship Foundation.
